The Queen of Skincare: Why You Need Retinol in Your Routine

Retinol is the queen of skincare…

Retinol has so many skin benefits - derived from vitamin A, she’s a powerful antioxidant that can do a lot for your skin which includes:

· Anti-ageing goodness: retinols build and support the maintenance of collagen meaning less fine lines and wrinkles!

· Acne/break out relief – perfect for all ages suffering from spots and blackheads from teenage to post-menopausal skin– everyone’s a winner!

· Overall skin – a brighter fresh complexion is created by using retinols.

· Reduction in skin pigmentation – used in combination with SPF retinol helps fade the appearance of age/sunspots and uneven skin tone!

Interestingly though, not all retinols are made equal! Medical-grade retinol by Obagi & ZO skincare brands contain a higher percentage of active ingredients than over-the-counter retinol, which will produce faster and greater benefits.

I plan out my patients skincare routine and generally start by incorporating a low strength retinol into the routine slowly, allowing the skin to become accustomed to the products and reducing the effects of purging (commonly peeling & increased sensitivity which always pass with time).

Most people will see the benefits from using retinols within six weeks, but you don’t get your full benefit until approximately a year after starting retinols - so consistency is key for achieving great skin!
